Removing SubAccount Relationships

What is the correct way to remove a sub account relationship from CRM?

I created some test subaccount relationships under one 'parent' account.  If I go to that parent accounts, click on subaccounts and then highlight the account I want to remove, I get a message stating:

"Deleting the Account will delete all records under the Account as well (for example, opportunities, activiteis, and contacts).  Sub-accounts will be removed from the account, but not deleted."

Ok, so I assumed that if I hit the X here it would simply remove the subaccount.  It gives me a confirm this deletion message "Are you sure you want to delete the Account, including all records under the Account?"  If I say "OK"  I get an error "The record cannot be deleted because it is associated with Another Record".    I don't want to delete the record... I just want to remove the subaccount relationship....

How????

Hi Katie, just open the account form of the subaccount and delete the value that's in the Parent Account field and click Save.

Voila. The two accounts are no longer related.

    Neil,

LOL!  That field had been previously relabled as "Bill-to-Account" and was not showing on the form.  Considering other ways Bill to account is being used currently in our system, this  was seriously confusing.  I have marked it as Parent Account and put it on the account form.

    Thank you!

    Hi Neil,

I am trying to remove the parent account relationship from an account.  When I go to the sub account and remove the parent account id it disappears from the form but once the sub account is saved the parent account returns!

     Any ideas?

Hi Barry, this isn't standard behaviour. The most likely explanation is that your system has been customised to achieve this (undesirable) functionality.

    Hi Neil,

Thanks for your response.  In the meantime I had found the answer.

CRM has a bug in it and will not allow you to blank fields in a record recognized as a duplicate.  When the record is saved the originalvalue is put back in the blank field.  Work around is to turn off duplicate detection rules, blank the field in question in the record in question, save the record and then turn duplicate detection rules back on.

This behavior is supposedly fixed (havedn't installed rollup yet to know for sure) in rollup 5.
