Displaying Dimensions on Charts of Accounts page.

Hello, everyone, I'm new to Dynamic Business Central. I'm trying to figure out how I can display dimensions on the charts of accounts page, many of our customer are used to GP setup, where you have segments displayed with the main account number. I recently ran the Cloud Data Migration from GP to Business Central, and I noticed only the main segment ID was applied as the Account No. and the other segment were setup as dimensions. So, when I go to Charts of Accounts on Business Central it only shows the main segment ID in this case the Account number. For example, in GP account number is 000-1220-00 but in business central it only shows up as 1220.

Please see below for reference:

So, my questions are:

1) Is there way we can configure the display to show other two dimensions also, like they have in it in GP?

2) Do I manually need to assign dimensions to each account whenever I run Cloud Data Migration?

3) What happens to other accounts which were on GP for example, 000-1220-01, or 000-1220-02?

Any help is appreciated!!

    Hi

This is to answer your first question. You can show dimensions in factbox. By default this is hidden but you can make it available through Personalization

Also for your question regarding segment and dimension see this blog post  https://thedynamicsexplorer.com/2020/08/05/dynamics-gp-vs-dynamics-365-business-central-account-segments-and-dimensions/  looks like you need to set each segment as dimension.

Thanks, this was helpful. But a quick follow up... so, there isn't a way we can make it look like they have in GP, right? Unless we manually change the account numbers.

I am not much familiar with GP. But looks like this is one of difference between GP and BC. Looks like it is a trade off between having multiple account that has segment and one account with dimension.

But I hope people with more familiarity with GP can provide more info.

    Hi,

Just to add to the excellent suggestions so far. In Business Central its a slightly different mind set when thinking about and creating GL codes than GP. As you know in GP you have the traditional GL code with segments for things like cost centres and departments. This means you have to create lots of GL codes for things like expenses when you want to analyse by cost centre. i.e. if the expense GL code for "Utilities" is 2000 and you want to analyse via a cost centre you'd have to create several GL codes like 01-2000 (for cost centre 01) and 02-2000 (for cost centre 02).

In business central the segment is replaced with a dimension. This means you only have to create one GL code for "Utilities" and when you come to post per cost centre you just select the relevant dimension and dimension value. Therefore when viewing the chart of accounts you only see the GL code, not the dimensions.

An interesting view which you might find beneficial is GL code by dimension, which is available by selecting "Balance > GL balance by Dimension". This shows you a break down of the values per dimension i.e. Below I want to see a breakdown by the dimension "Department".

    And this shows the breakdown:

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Gavin
