Installation problems with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0; domain does not exist

Hi all,

I am trying to install Microsoft Dynamics CRM on a Windows Web Server 2008 without success. The installation fails with the following error:
“Action Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Common.Analyzer+CollectAction failed.
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007054B) Abort / Retry / Ignore”

If I choose to ignore the error I can proceed to the deployment options screen but there is no computer listed under the 'Select name of computer running SQL Server' dropdown. (Clicking the little refresh icon doesn't help.)

I’ve read that this error could be related to Active Directory, so I’ve tried to install the MMC Active Directory snap-in, but the schmmgmt.dll fails to register and I can't locate the full path to it to run it correctly (I’ve done a search but can’t find it - is it included in Web Server?).

The Dynamics documentation says Web Server is a supported platform, so my understanding is the installation should either a) proceed without the Active Directory installation or b) it should be possible to install Active Directory on the machine, or is the error message I am seeing related to something else altogether??

Many thanks for your help in advance.

    Hello, Bridget.

It would be possible to install CRM on this server only in the case you will include this server to some Domain. As I know it is impossible to install Domain Controller Role to this server.

So you have 2 ways out:

    1. Include this server to some domain.

    2. Install Windows Standard Server 2008.

Ok, thank you for confirming my suspicions.  Looks like option 2 it is then…

    Thanks!
