Migrate from CRM 2013 on-premise to CRM Online Dynamics 365

I am hoping that someone can advise the best way to move from CRM 2013 on-premise to Online.

The current on-premise has service pack 1 of CRM applied.

One approach we are trying just now is exporting the default solution and importing this into the Online Dynamics 365 CRM.

This approach is slow because we also then have to move data from the on-premise version to online.

Can people please share any experience if you have been through this.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Agree with David, the current option available is to apply the solution and then migrate data. Do go through following document to understand all the restrictions and practice:

    download.microsoft.com/.../OPtoCRMOnlineMigration.pdf

There is a news of new tool form product team where the CRM on-prem can be upgraded to Online without Data Migration - but then that is still not released.

    Thanks,

Thank you to all that answered.

We are using a tool from codeplex (MSCRM Toolkit) to move reference data across and may use Scribe to move other data.

I've heard rumours about an on-premise to on-line migration tool from Microsoft that's in the works.  Hopefully the spring 2017 release cycle will tell us more about when it might be ready.   In the mean time you have very few options besides moving the solution (and hoping it imports in D365) and then moving the data.

Currently the only way to move to Crm Online is as you're doing; import customisations and migrating the data. The main issues to consider when migrating data are:

    • Importing entities in the right sequence
    • System-generated fields: You can keep the createdon values by using overriddencreatedon, but the modifiedon will be the time of import
    • Entities with specific methods for changing state - e.g. cases, orders
