I have to GIVE a GP Interview - HELP

We are hiring a contractor for the implementation of our GP product. Does anyone know where I can get a set of interview questions to ask. I don't know GP (which is why we are getting in a contractor). I want to make sure they know the GP 10.0. I'm concerned I will not be able to ask the questions that "separate the big dogs for the pups"

Thanks in advance for any help.

Excellent advice from Mariano, as always.

Change management is a HUGE part of implementing a new ERP system.  Ask questions geared to find out how the contractor handles resistance from users and how he/she handles the training aspects of the implementation.

I would also want to see an example of their standard implementation methodology to make sure they have contingency plans for when things don't go as planned, which is inevitable.

Great stuff. I will ensure I ask about PM and Change Control processes.

Are there any technical questions you would ask that if they know this answer they probly know what they are doing?

That would be tough without knowing the scope of your project, Greg, and the tasks that are expected of the consultant.  I think your best bet is to get references from past clients.  If he/she has good references, chances are good they know what they're doing.

If you want to shoot me an email with more details of your project, I'll be glad to give you some pointers.  fhamelly@eastcoast-dynamics.com.

We are a state agency. I'm designing GP to interface into our State Accounting System. The scope will focus on AP, AR and Budgeting.  Our current State mainframe system leaves some functionality off the table. My plan is to project my medium size agency with the tools of modern tools - GP, an then interface/reconcile with the States Accounting System.

Good - that's a fairly limited scope which will make your job easier.  I agree with Mariano - make sure your consultant is very familiar with GASB regs and the Financial, PM (Payables Management) and RM (Receivables Management) modules of GP.  Are you going to develop an automated interface to the mainframe system or rely on periodic imports from GP?

Just a general comment...maybe not so relevant to the OP, but Mariano and Frank have answered it quite well.

Ask them where they worked before. Ask them to name some people they worked with. Write all this info down - or have an assistant do it.  At the end of the interview ask them would they mind if you contacted some of the people they mentioned. If they say 'yes'...then contact everyone on the list. If they say 'no' then you gotta wonder why.

Interviews I find to be a very inexact science. Talking to everyone you can about a candidate helps avoid mistakes.

I also try and 'hit the interviewee in the stomach' at least once...by this I mean asking them a somewhat unfair or difficult question that will stump them. If they can pick themselves up off the floor in an interview (probably one of the most stressful situations a person can be in)...they will get up in any situation in life. Being able to pick yourself up and get on with it is good for business.
