new to GP being told it takes a day to run mrp

How many parts, builds, assemblies do you have?
More information will make it easier to answer the question - Version of GP, Server version - the regular technical stuff will help.
As Bill said,
it entirely depends on how large your inventory is and what the settings are for the refresh of your MRP .. this can be as short as a few days for forcasting or several months, which can take hours to generate.
Please provide more details on your setup.
