Template - Modify and Use

ReportReport

It is not as painful as I thought.  Open the Template tool, create a NEW version of a Default as you can not edit the default - I get that.

Made my copy - click on Modify - open Word - figure out what you don't know about Word and templates and make the changes to the layout.

So far so good.  In fact 10 minutes after starting I thought I am done.  How very 'not painful'

Well that was until I tried to get Dynamics to use the new template.

Ok, sorry I think I did the correct assignment of the Modified Template to the company specific database.  I mean, click on Assign, click on the report, click on the database.  Either it is the Original / Default or it is the modified one.

All the click and check boxes appear to point to the modified template.

Now to the Payables Check Remittance printing.  This is where I am expecting to see the new modified version of the template - but nope, I have the old one.

So, I figure, hay, like RW maybe a restart of GP will do it - nope I still get the old one.

That was 2 hours ago.  Now, such a simple processes is out of control.

What am I missing - I am sure it is something really simple - click "THAT ONE" is going to be the answer.  So, how fast will this one get snapped up?  5 min - 10 min - less.

Let me thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Bill,

I saw that Steve Erbach provided you with the detailed steps about all the work to manage Word Templates in this other thread :-)  community.dynamics.com/.../189010

I'm glad you figured it out and in the end it all boils down to some good training and practice. Mark's sessions from the GPUG Summit was also to me the 'clicker' to a long-time frustrating battle with Word Templates. After having seen this, I'm going to start to play around Templates again, because we do have some challenges with multiple companies using custom reports, and since GP only allows you 2 custom reports for some modules (in POP and SOP you have the 'blank' and 'other' reports only), we have to maintain various dictionary copies for REPORTS.DIC for the different companies.

Something that we could get rid of by using the Word Templates..

    Hi Bill,

Do you have access to the GPUG recorded Webinars ? last month I watched one about Word Templates and how to become a master in them :-)... Very nice webinar and maybe you're missing just a small step somewhere..

    Have a look at it : https://www.gpug.com/communities/community-home/librarydocuments/viewdocument/?DocumentKey=a9e1dffa-9c8f-40e0-b7a8-6b4b41fba0b7&tab=librarydocuments

Let me know if you don't have access, I'll try to find you another link..

RE: Template - Modify and Use

Thought I better share something that was not mentioned above.  When I close the Word document, it does not ask to SAVE the changes.  When I try to SAVE the changes it wants to save the file as a local file in my Users\<USERNAME>\documents\temp folder on my local computer.

Great - if I am the only person on the network that wants to use this, sure that will work.  I have not tried to save to a share, but willing to do so as needed.

Read a posting and I thought it said the word template is saved within the database and that the user did not have control over this.

What am I doing wrong.  I accept I have an error, but I don't know the solution.
