Production Order Numbers Jumping Up/Not Sequential

We only use Released Production Orders (do not use simulated, planned, firm planned functionality), and are finding that our Production Order No. Series is skipping numbers.
We suspect this has something to do with the planning that BC is doing in the background.

I created and deleted three Released Production Orders in a row and got sequential numbers as expected - 194, 195, and 196. I then opened the Order Planning page and ran the "Calculate Plan". The next Released Production Order I created was 237.

Why is Order Planning "consuming" Production Order numbers? Is there a way to prevent this?

Note that in our Manufacturing Setup page, we've set Planned Order Nos., Firm Planned Order Nos., and Released Order Nos. to all use the same No. Series. We don't need a No. Series for Planned and Firm Planned since we don't use them, but Order Planning requires those to have a No. Series assigned.
I have the same question (0)

Hi, This is standard behavior, so different No. Series are usually set. If you want to modify this behavior, I think you can only customize it.
Hopefully other experts can give you better advice.
    Thanks

In Business Central, if you use the same number series for Planned, Firm Planned, and Released Production Orders, the Order Planning function will "consume" numbers from that series when generating planned and firm planned orders in the background, even if you don’t actively use them. This happens because, when you run the "Calculate Plan" function, Business Central creates temporary production orders in the Planned or Firm Planned states as it calculates requirements, which consumes numbers from your specified series. These temporary orders are often deleted immediately after use, but the numbers are still skipped over.

To avoid this issue, you have a couple of options:

    1. Separate Number Series for Each Order Type: Assign distinct number series for Planned, Firm Planned, and Released Production Orders. Even if you don’t use the Planned and Firm Planned types, this configuration ensures that when you run Order Planning, Business Central uses different sequences for temporary calculations, leaving your Released Production Order numbers non skipped

    2. Disable Automatic Planning for Non-Used Orders: If feasible for your operations, you could look into disabling any automatic planning that might trigger the creation of these temporary orders. This may require adjustments in your Manufacturing Setup or Order Planning parameters, but it can help reduce unnecessary number consumption.

    3. Modify Your Workflow: If you don’t need the planning function at all, consider using manual methods or alternative setups to manage production order planning and creation without impacting your number series.

By assigning distinct series or limiting the planning feature, you should be able to maintain sequential numbering for your Released Production Orders without skipped numbers. If you want to consult or take the partner help for customize if you are looking to meet your object but above suggestion is standardized one and what best fit you can within standard business central product.

We faced same challenges in one of the rollouts so we have disable automatic planning for non used orders with standard setup

I agree with Yun that you could take a look at the manufacturing setup and use a different nos series for planned production orders, which would be consumed by planning. You could also blank out simulated, firm planned as well.

This is standard behavior. If you open the Requisition Line table (246) after running order planning, which the system uses for all planning functions, you can see information for the calculated lines that shows how the system retrieves numbers from the number series in the Ref. Order No. field. If you continue refreshing order planning, you’ll notice that this number keeps changing.

    Thanks all for the responses.

As suggested, we set up different No. Series for Planned, Firm Planned, and Released, which seems to have solved our issue.
