Why would a checkbox goes NULL?

In SL we have had instances where a checkbox field shows up "grayed out".  Not really checked or unchecked.  (If you look behind the scenes in the database it is a NULL value).

In one instance, via Customization Manager we added a USER field to the Employee screen and called it "Part-Time".  We made it a checkbox.  If checked, in the database it shows as a ONE (1).  If unchecked it shows as a ZERO (0).

However, for some unknown reason, this field sometimes goes NULL in the database and shows up "grayed out" in the SL screen.

Any theories on what might cause this unordinary behavior?

    Hi RedStorm,

I tested this issue by adding a checkbox to the Employee tab.  I used the User5 field in the Employee table.  I found that initially when the screen is loaded, the checkbox contains a check mark but it is grayed out.  However the field is still enabled and you can uncheck or check the box.

I found that the Default property for this checkbox was blank.  If you specify a Default property of 0 or 1, then the checkbox doesn't appear as grayed out.

What do you have in the Default property?  I suppose if it is blank, the system doesn't know what the default should be.

Let me know if I tested this properly.  Where did you add the checkbox and what table and field did you use?  Maybe paste in a screenshot if your field isn't as I described above.

Carolyn, you were exactly correct.  The default was empty.  I changed to 0 and it looks much better!  Thank you for the information.  Our accounting group appreciates the fix! :-)
