Outlook App for On-Premise CRM 2016

Hi All,

There is no shortage of blog posts and YouTube videos showing the basic functionality of the "Outlook App" for CRM 2016 - specifically from late 2015.  At that time, it was clear that the Outlook App wasn't supported for On-Premise CRM.  However, I see that Microsoft now has a section on their KB for installing the App against an On-Premise CRM 2016 server (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn946901.aspx#BKMK_DeployOnprem).  It basically says to enable IFD. OK......  Does anyone else have any insight into this?  Does the Outlook App for CRM 2016 actually integrate (either at all or WELL) with On-Premise CRM?

    Hi

Yes the App will work for 2016 Onprem

    technet.microsoft.com/.../dn946901(v=crm.8).aspx

have a look at this article

Mark - I linked that article in my original post. It's limited in what it says about On-Premise. I was looking for some direct/personal insight into other's experience in integrating it and seeing if it actually works "well". I'm not sure I would have agreed the CRM Outlook Client worked "well" in CRM 4 - for example.

With that said, for the App to work "on premise", that article (and Microsoft Support, whom I talked to) says that both Exchange and CRM need to be On-Premise, it can't be a mix.

Now, does that mean BOTH on the same network? Or could it be CRM OnPremise on one network and Exchange OnPremise on another network -- and the 2 connect via IFD? This is the scenario we'd be considering for our Clients we host CRM for.

    Hi JEPalm,

First of all, love your Jean-Luc Picard image! :)

We utilized the CRM Outlook application against an on premise CRM environment that connected to an Exchange environment in the same network.   This worked fine for us and we used server side synchronization for the synchronization approach.

Although we have not tried, I would not expect your CRM environment would need to be IFD for this integration to work as I expect the exchange integration pulls the information required through that connection vs. pushing anything to the CRM environment requiring IFD.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Thanks,

You do not need IFD to work on Outlook for CRM. Here's a short guide:

Let me know, if you still have questions

Someone above said you do not need IFD and linked to a page, but that page is for the full client.  As far as I can tell, I need IFD to set up the Outlook App. However, we have sensitive data and cannot open our application up beyond the firewall.  "Internet-Facing Deployment" - does that actually mean opened up to the internet?  I need to keep this tightly behind a firewall.  Can you have "IFD" enabled and still stay behind a firewall?

So we had an extensive conversation with Microsoft about it. It is possible, and well-documented, but you do have to have Exchange 2013 or 2016. You also have to have server-side synchronization configured, and you need to have your CRM set up with IFD.

Just wanted to add that you can have IFD enabled and remain behind a firewall. We learned this also from talking to MS.

Hi Shannon, where can we find the documentation you mention? Or do we have to contact Microsoft to obtain it?

It was all on the publicly available website.

    We have the following

CRM 2016 on prem with IFD setup

    Exchange online

The dynamics outlook app just gives us an error about unable to connect to our server.

Has anyone actually seen the outlook app work with exchange online and crm on prem?

Not "is it possible according to docs".  I'm starting to doubt that it works with on prem and exchange online.
