Configuring change tracking for Audit object?

Hi,

I'm trying to get my head around how to report changes to several entities (contact, account, and some custom entities).  I've read that it's possible to export the Audit entity via Data Export Service, but in order to do this, change tracking needs to be switched on for that entity.  Will this work? If not, does anyone have a good solution that enables reporting on changes made to (say) a contact at an individual level?  Ultimately we want to report on number of changes in an attribute from value a to value b over time....

Dynamics 365 CE 9.x

cheers,

KM

    Hi,

    Thank you for your query.

There are 2 ways to do this:

    • Enable Change Tracking (Audit History): this option will allow you to audit changes for the configured entities and attributes. You can see the Change Log in Audit History tab for a record on Audit Summary View in general within CRM. Here are considerations for this option:
    • Custom Plugin: Another option is to create a plugin a track your changes in a custom (log) entity. This requires more code, however you can build reports on this data and its easy to integrate.

In my opinion, enabling change tracking is preferred, however you have to do some extra work to extract this data to external systems.
