Capacity planning for Production Lines

Has anyone got any tips or advice on how to capacity plan against production lines (a team of people)

Customer I'm working with creates hours capacity against a line in production. So one line for cutting (made up of 6 people) one line for sewing (made up of 6 people) etc. In D365FO using resource groups and job scheduling means one resource is allocated to a job (which doesn't work) so the only solution I can envisage is to have a resource representing a line. I read on a blog that the scheduling efficiency percentage could be set to 600% so that the capacity would be representative of 6 people.

The problem is the customer wants capacity to be dynamic - if one line is overloaded people can be moved from one line to another thus increasing capacity. Capacity therefore changes week by week on each line.

Is this beyond the planning/scheduling capabilities of D365FO and should they be looking for a third party scheduling tool?

I have the same question (0)

As I've not had a response on this I thought I would detail my proposal to the customer.

I used a resource per line and where the line comprised of 6 workers, I set up the working time template to have a 600% efficiency

I set up multiple working time templates and calendars for %400, %500, %600, %700 and %800 efficiencies. My 600% calendar is the default as typically I have 6 people on a line.

I schedule production orders and review the capacity graphs. If I'm over loaded on certain days for certain lines I navigate to the calendar deviations for that resource and on the days in question I change calendars to add more people to the line (therefore increasing capacity on those days)

Once the calendars are set up its creating the deviations that takes time

the only thing I don't understand on your valuable solution is the impact on the production output.

Should not increasing the number of operators increase the output of batch orders?

If yes , your model would not work as just increasing / decreasing the number of hours spent on a PB.

    Hi,

These are not batch orders - standard production orders (not sure if that makes a difference). I'm not in reality increasing the number of operators I'm increasing the capacity available for the resource on any given day. This will mean that work is finished faster and I can increase the amount of production orders I can schedule - I'm not sure why you think this method would increase output as my output is fixed according to the demand?

I thought  you wanted  to model  the system in a way then based on how much you need to produce ,  the system would need to tell you how many operators are needed .

No Alessandro - I wanted to be able to view capacity for a resource over any time period and stop that resource becoming overloaded. I can only ever produce according to the demand (sales orders or forecast). The capacity graphs will tell me when I'm overloaded and the calendar deviations will allow me to increase capacity based on manpower.
