Extremely slow page load only when customizing a solution in CRM 2011 on-premise

Browsing the web application is fast for an end user e.g. when visiting http://applicationurl/orgname/main.aspx# and accessing lists of records, forms, views etc. all load within a few seconds. Any form of customization e.g. when accessing http://applicationurl/orgname/tools/solution/edit.aspx page load times increase to 1-2 minutes. CPU and memory usage on the web server seem normal (< 10% and 50% respectively) likewise for the separate SQL server.

Monitoring network traffic in Chrome shows a long wait period after the initial request:

(there is another lengthy wait for the second page request (areas.aspx?...).

It is a relatively new on-premise instance with two organisations (the second is unused with only the activity feeds solution installed, i.e. does not include a managed solution like the first). Both organisations suffer from the same poor performance when attempting to customize.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What rollup are you on, it's always worth upgrading to the latest rollup.  Although be careful if you are on a rollup lower than rollup 12, because rollup 12 has the multibrowser javascript change.

Have you implemented the optimization techniques in the Optimizing and Maintaining Client Performance for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 and CRM Online ?

delete browsing history speeds up load times

Do you have a lot of customizations on the forms, you may want to try removing some to see if this has an effect.

This blog suggests to collapse the tabs to improve speed.

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes we're on the latest (rollup 15).

It looks like your suggestions are application-wide rather than specifically targeting the customization area of the application. Entity forms load quickly. It is accessing pages such as Settings > Solution > 'Customize the system' where we see a huge decrease in performance.

Sorry to bump this but has anyone got any idea why these requests would be waiting for so long? Is there anything I could provide (fiddler logs?) that would help diagnose the problem?

Im having a very similar issue right now with our system. Seems to only be slow when customizing or doing any type of search in the system. Any resolution to this issue yet?

At the moment we're just living with it but when the system moves to production I'm expecting the issue to be raised again. If you manage to get to the bottom of it I'd be interested to hear your findings.

I am having exactly the same issue here. The delay when clicking on an entity to customise is about 10 seconds - way longer than with CRM2011.

Hi I also have began experiencing this issue after installing CRM 2013, When adding entities or creating relationships or editing the form it takes well over 30 secs to load the page, however the rest of CRM seems to load without a problem. There are no spikes in memory/cpu or network and the boxes have 8 gigs memory on App server and 8 gigs on SQL server. There are no Event logs or Errors? I have installed SP1 for CRM 2013 also and has not resolved the issue. I have Run Fiddler Trace and haven't been able to capture anything meaningful?

I was able to improve performance by disabling Firefox add-ons that were apparently not playing well with the Dynamics CRM system.

Because I have over 10 active add-ons, I enabled Firefox Safe mode when I run MS CRM. Someone with more time could work to identify the specific add-ons causing the problem, but Safe mode certainly quickly addresses my problem.

This got the performance from very slow up to just sluggish, which is a pretty decent improvement.

We have the exact same problem in CRM 2013. Were you able to find a solution?
