Products based on months

Hi,

We have CRM installed today, but are looking into using more of it's features regarding products. Previously the sale staff has entered the information about the price and product in the description, but now we want to start using the actual feature for products.

The "problem" is that I cannot come up with a good solution for the pricing of our products. We sell subscriptions based on a monthly fee on periods of 12, 24 or 36 months. We do not want to use the quantity field for entering this since it's possible to buy several "subscriptions" of the same products (for example, buy 5 subscriptions of the same product for 12 months).

The ideal would be to have the price on the product set to the monthly cost and then have some sort of field where we could enter the subscription period (12, 24 or 36 months) and have the total price being calculated as (monthly cost*quantity*months).

I thought of using units as some sort of "month" container, but it did not seem to have any impact on the price.

The lazy solution is to add the same product multiple times with names like 12 months, 24 months and 36 months. But that requires a lot of work for us and it would be nice not having duplicates of the same item...

Anyone have any ideas? Or is the solution here to build a custom price engine (which I don't want to do...)?

I think the right path from a user point of view is using Units. Have a base unit of 1 Month, then units of 12 Months, 24 Months etc, which are set up as the correct multiples of 1 month.

You would only need one product, but would need a price list item for each unit.

Ideally set the List Price for one month on the Product (set the default unit to 1 Month as well), then calculate all the Price List Item prices as a percentage of this. If you use 100% of list, then sell 5 x "24 month" (unit), CRM will calculate 5 x 24 x list price correctly, because of how the units are related to the default unit for the product (it will also do this through various layers of units eg 1 decade = 10 years = 10 * 52 weeks = 10 * 52 * 7 days)

You could incorporate discounts into the bigger units eg 36 months set price as 95% of list, and could vary this between different price lists if you wanted to.

By using percentages rather than fixed prices, you can update the Product list price in one place and the rest just follows.

    Hi,

I have a similar request: We have managed services priced on a monthly basis. Services are packaged in a 6 or 12 month bundle. When selecting the 6 or 12 month contract, the opportunity revenue needs to be 6x or 12x of the monthly rate. I've already configured the base unit (Monthly) and the 6M and 12M units groups, with qty of 6x and 12x respectively, so no problem there.

To complicate the matter, we have no list price for the managed services. Based  on the level of effort, we'll specify the base monthly cost once we've qualified the opportunity, and will add it manually in the opportunity.

How do I generate a product which will multiply the manually entered pricing accordingly in the opportunity?

    Thanks.
