This customer has several stores, and is running HQ on SQL Server 2000 STD. He does almost all of his Tech work himself, and was adding another store and came up with this error:
("Too many back up devices specified for backup or restore, only 64 are allowed")
Microsoft said they couldn't help him with it since SQL 2000 Std is no longer supported for use with RMS. His DB is 4.7 GB now, and so the SQL 2005 Express that he also has installed on his Server would still not be enough to migrate to. He could go to SQL 2008 Express, which holds up to 10GB, and according to MS is compatible with his WServer 2003. He doesn't like to spend money (surprise!), so would like to avoid buying SQL Server 2008 STD & CALs.
I thought he had to upgrade the HQ DB and all of the stores at once, since MS had once told me that all locations should be on the same SQL version and build for RMS and HQ to communicate properly, but that must have been a user with old incompatible versions and not just different ones. Since Tod’s stores are on SQL 2005 Express and were connecting fine with his SQL 2000 STD, and I have plenty of customers that are running full SQL at HQ, Express at the stores, etc. then I guess he can just convert the the HQ DB on the Server, and leave the stores as they are for now.
What is the process to switch from SQL 2000 STD to SQL 2008 Express? I don't think there is a straight upgrade path since they are different editions, and in the MS hiearchy Express would be a downgrade.
Thanks
Mike
