Is it safe to store customer sensitive data in D365 CRM Online?

We are migrating our CRM 2016 on premise applications to D365 Online, as part of it we have customer NPI data (sensitive data) to be encrypted & secured; having said that we have couple of questions on how the NPI data is secured in cloud

When I implement FSP (Field Level Security) in CRM 2016 on premise, NPI data is stored in SQL as plain text, SQL user with basic privileges can see the NPI data in clear text which is not expected from security perspective, does the same thing happens even in D365 Online SQL?

If yes, from Information Security perspective, how can we be sure that their NPI data is not misused?

Any tools/features which encrypts/masks data from SQL perspecitve (CRM Online)?

If implementing a plug-in itself is a solution, any blogs/articles can be pointed in this direction?
