CRM 2016 - Document Template with multiline text

Hi all,

I have several text area/multiline text field in my entity, and user would often enter data that contains line break. E.g. bulleted text etc.

However, I'm unsure how to get a plain text control in the document template to render (and not strip out) the line break. I've also tried with rich text control with no luck.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Sneha,

I haven't tested this in CRM 2016. That may mean you have to find an alternative method. Some of the replies above included 3rd party add-ons that may be able to resolve your issue.

Hi Sneha,

It's still working for me although we are using D365 CRM online.

1. In the MS Word template you need to select the inserted plain text control.

2. Then you need to click on the Developer tab and select Properties. Check the Allow Carriage Return tickbox and click ok.

3. If you upload the new template and regenerate the document from CRM it should work.

Unfortunately CRM Word Template does not support multiline text.

If you need the following features not supported in Word Template, multiline text, logical operations, hide text, merge documents and similar you then need Dynamics Docs:

Hi all,

One year on I finally found the answer. The setting you need to configure is in MS Word.

In MS Word, after you have added the plain text content control, select the control and navigate to the Developer tab. In the control section, click Properties. In the popup dialog, check the box for "Allow carriage returns (multiple paragraphs)".

This issue is resolved with Dynamics Docs.

Dynamics Docs can PDF Word Templates populated with fields from CRM records and the solution works with all CRM versions not just with CRM 2016 onward.

I have this issue as well. Even trying to convert the line breaks (\n) to include a carriage return (\r\n) did nothing. Word still reads them as spaces.

I've submitted a CRM Idea here. Hopefully they see it and there are enough votes.

Rich text fields are not yet supported properly - the carriage returns get stripped before they get to the document, but Word rich text controls handle paragraphs just fine. Hopefully this will be improved in the next version.

Various third party apps can handle this. Certainly Xperido from Invenso, and probably Documents Core Pack from MSCRM Addons (which I have not used)
