Sloooow performance in Business Portal when logging in

Posted on by 180

Upon logging in first thing in the morning to our instance of Business Portal for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 (version 5.1.3400.1038), the initial user experience is extremely slow and sluggish! Our consultant/BP expert in charge of installing this for us tells me that Business Portal always starts out slow the first couple times you login every day or after any IIS reset that is done (obviously). Supposedly, Microsoft knows about this and has not developed a fix for this performance.  He also states that one can defiantly increase the value for the time out so you don’t get the error messages anymore, but chances are it will take some time to “warm up” still.

I guess my question is this: this BP site is hosted on the SharePoint 2010 Enterprise server we use internally at my company, which I am in charge of administrating. The BP site is on port 80, as well as 20 other departmental SharePoint sites that are running in very fine and snappy condition. These other sites, residing on the same web application, experience none of the performance issues that the Business Portal site is experiencing.  If, as I am told, BP inherits the timeout values from IIS so whatever you have set in IIS is the value it uses, wouldn't the other port 80 sites being having the same issue. I don't buy that it's an IIS matter--just my hunch.

Has anybody else experienced roughly the same scenario that I detail above? If so, what exactly did you do, or do you do, to alleviate the matter? That or I am curious as to what any of you might recommend in the troubleshooting regard. I am stumped for the moment. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated--thank you and good day/evening.

One workaround/hack some customers have employed is creating a scheduled task that launches Internet Explorer to the BP site a few times prior to employees coming into the office.  This helps to avoid the early morning perf issues.

    Thanks

In relation to the timeout when adding BP users, I found the resolution in my case was to make sure the Primary DNS suffix was working correctly on the BP server especially; apparently it was not.

I had to manually set it in advanced network properties-> DNS, then add to Append these DNS suffixes (in order). After that it started to resolve in about two seconds.

Before that it took 4mins and 15 secs to resolve.

I changed it back after and it still worked quickly, so I am guessing it refreshed something maybe in the registry, not sure though.

Hi there....  I also have a server with 16GB RAM, amd 4 processors and experience the same time out issues on a client pc.  It is extremely frustrating.  I am in a test phase and cannot go live with the BP until this is resolved - cannot have my users timing out!  If i am on the web-server itself, there is no issue with performance at all.

Okay, so at the moment, I haven't heard from anyone about the morning performance per say; resources have been doubled to 16 GB of RAM, and the CPU is more than sufficient on the server. SharePoint is found to be working in all other sites still. The one thing that keeps cropping up, however, is a time-out when one of our site admins is trying to add users in the BP users list(Site Settings --> Business Portal/.Users). It reads as follows:

    Server Error in '/' Application

    Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

    Stack Trace:

    [HttpException (0x80004005): Request timed out.]

Why would this one functionality still be timing out, if everything else has been jacked so high for hardware? Thoughts?

    Hello Richard,

To add with what Mohammad has mentioned here, the first time users login to Business Portal in the morning and periodically through the day, the application will load slow due to IIS caching information throughout the day.

After IIS caches the information, each page will load much slower than it does each subsequent time a user access that page. The IIS caching is by design and while there may be some ways to change how frequently IIS caches the information, we don't have any way to completely stopping the caching from occurring.

CPU and RAM amounts on the server are huge as well, as we recommend 8 GB of Available RAM on a 64-bit server, as a minimum along with a dual-core or two single-core processors as a minimum.

Please let us know if you have further related questions.

    Thank you

Re: Sloooow performance in Business Portal when logging in

    Richard,

Thank you for this question, actually I been through this before and been able to identify reasons behind such a slowness but had to work on the solution step by step, I have more than 15 cutomers working on Business Portal and at least 3 customers running eRequisition with a very high speed.

As a start, you might need to make sure that your hardware for the server is "very high" I always used to hear from my customers that we are running very good servers and get shoked when I see 8 GB RAM for 30 users! You need to make sue that you are using the "double" of what folks at Microsoft recommends to get the best performance and data reliability, plus make sure that your network is very stable, IT people always says that network is very stable but they feel like if they have small network lacks this does not make difference! You need to make sure that connection between client and server is very stable to avoid any issues.

Getting rid of the above, you need to move on and proceed with invistigating the portal itself, start by navigating the first page and check if it does load fast or not, I assume that your first page is a blank page that contains only one image and should load very fast, if that was not the case then you shouldn't start looking into the portal and back to check your SharePoint services.

Next step after checking the SharePoint you will need to valiate that all other objects are running well, go to one of the application pages like Purchasing and check if it takes time to load, if so first thing to be done on the page is removing the Reporting Services reports on the page like charts and any other reporting objects, normally it is only one charton this page that could be easily removed, if this fasten up the process big time then your issue is related to the reporting services of the SQL that requires to be optmized.

Above are the main reasons behind the delayness of the business portal, however you still have one important section which is the queries related to the business portal itself, normally these are optimized by Microsoft to load data faster than anything! But incase you got these loaded slowly then you might have issues in connectivity between Buiness Portal and GP database.

Follow steps above and hopefully you reach the reasons behind the slowness, hope that this helps.
