GP 2010 to 2015 R2 Upgrade --- Two Questions

This weekend I plan to upgrade our company from GP 2010 SP4 to GP 2015 R2. After going through this process going back to GP 6.5 I know there are some gotchas with a lot of GP upgrades. Even after going through the helpful documentation notes.

My two questions:

  1. I have two VS Tools for GP 2010 custom Add-Ins. These function fine when I have a "clean" copy of the local client's GP 2010 AddIns folder populated that those particular custom DLL files, along with the GP DLL files. Can I copy this same folder into the GP 2015 R2 client install? Without having to upgrade the custom Add-Ins to a newer version of VS Tools for GP?
  2. I recall an upgrade or two ago that all SmartList entries we created were lost after upgrading. Only the default SmartList entries appeared, so I had to manually create the others from scratch. We don't use SmartList Builder, we only take the default entries, modify the search criteria a bit, and save them with new names. Will these entries carry over into GP 2015 R2?

Actually all of the upgraded AddIns are working. One user hadn't pulled down the updated fileset. Glad to have this behind me!

It is indeed complete. The SmartLists indeed carried over. The VS Tools for the custom GP AddIns I have are partially functional. I recompiled them using VS Tools for GP 2015 DLL's and am still testing them.

The hairiest part of the upgrade was way back in like GP 9 or 10 we had a few GP companies using the HR/Payroll module. We deactivated that GP module, but there were old SQL tables left for those companies. These failed to upgrade, so I had to manually modify a couple of DB tables so they would upgrade okay.

All in the rearview now. For the most part :)

    Thanks for the follow-up!

Tell us, how did the upgrade go, I guess it is complete now?

    Tim.

Actually I am not implementing Menus for VS Tools. I have Visual Studio Tools for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 SDK in place. Looking in the install media folders I see a GP 2015 version of this. So worst case is I can recompile my Add-Ins using the new SDK if they cause issues.

    Appreciate your replies!

I just did a quick check because the visual studio tools thing sounded familiar.  Apparently it's not included with the software of GP anymore, you have to download it separately.  See here:  winthropdc.wordpress.com/.../visual-studio-integration-tool-replaces-menus-for-visual-studio-tools

And you should be good to go with the January 2016 hotfix since that is later than the build I mentioned.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback! I have a VMware environment, so I _could_ perform a test upgrade on a dummy VM to see any gotchas. Just a bit time-constrained now.

That's certainly good news about the SmartList entries migrating over. When I look at my GP 2015 R2 software downloads, I have the following:

    • MDGP2015_R2_DVD_ENUS.zip (the initial install source)
    • MicrosoftDynamicsGP14-KB3134012-ENU.msp (a GP January 2016 hotfix rollup)

So the rollup should include the SmartList hotfixes, since then GP would be at version 14.00.0952 from what I see. That's certainly reassuring.

When I'm upgrading then I assume it's the usual routine. Well usual is a subjective term, lol. I would run the initial install source, then run the MSP rollup. And at that point I would launch the GP client to run through the remainder of the routine. And wait for potential Dex errors along the way.

As for Visual Studio Tools for GP 2010, if dropping the AddIns folder into the GP 2015 R2 program folder doesn't do the trick I will have to look at Visual Studio Tools for GP 2015, which is under the initial install source IIRC.

I don't have an answer for you on number 1 but for number 2, there "shouldn't" be an issue with all of the Smartlists sticking with the new version.  I recently just did a test upgrade from the same build of 2010 to GP 2015 R2 and they all came over fine.  One thing to mention, make sure you go to one of the hotfixes of GP 2015 R2 (14.00.0898 is the one I did) because it does fix an upgrade issue with Smartlists.  See here for details:  community.dynamics.com/.../draft-known-upgrade-issues-when-upgrading-to-microsoft-dynamics-gp-2015-r2.
