Dynamics CRM 365 - Display lookup field as drop down

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi

I am new to Dynamics CRM 365.

I have  a lookup field on my entity 'oppurtunity' and i like to show it as a dropdown.  Is this possible?  If so, please suggest the steps.

Infact I have 2 lookups to show as dropdowns.

Say Country and City lookup fields.

When the user choose a particular country, the City dropdown should automatically filter and show only cities that belong to a given country.  I am hoping, this is possible.  Please suggest steps to create this.

Regards

    Hi,

There is no way to display the lookups field as the dropdown. The related record filtering for lookup is the best way to use.

So, there isn't a way to show the lookup as a dropdown? or is not a best practice?   One of my solutions requires showing these look up fields as dropdowns as per client's requirement.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I  am happy to accept OOB is the best practice, but like to hear if there are alternatives and limitations that comes with that option.

    Hello ,

Your approach is correct , in addition you can create a business rule to lock the city until country lookup fill the data.

I describe all the steps in below video , hope this helps -

    Hi Pradeep,

You should have to use OOB functionality rather than creating drop down list.

This seem to have worked, it displays related cities when selecting a particular country on the Opportunity form.

Do you see any issues with this approach?  This is right approach actually, I dont think so you could face any issue.

    Hi Pravin,

Thank you for your response and solution on this.  I have tried a different way with out using javascript and it works.

I created 2 entities Country and City

City entity has a field Country as a lookup data type mapped to Country entity

On opportunity form added 2 fields Country and City

Changed Properties of City field and enabled "Related Records Filtering"

Then  Selected "Only Show Records Where" -> Country (Opportunities)

Then Select "Contains" -> City (Opportunities)

This seem to have worked, it displays related cities when selecting a particular country on the Opportunity form.

Do you see any issues with this approach?

By the way, is there a work around to display these fields as Drop downs and still have the filtering applied?

    Regards,

    Pradeep

    Hi There,

I would suggest you to apply custom filer rather than creating lookup as dropdown list.
