Check Links Does Not Complete

Hi,

After reconciling our inventory.  I ran a Check Links on the Inventory.

It appears that the process is now in limbo (running about 20minutes.  No print screens appear and when I attempt to close GP it informs me that "Processes are currently being run that cannot be deleted.  These processes must be run to completion before you exit."

Do I continue to wait?  I ran check links a previous time a couple of months ago and the completion time was relatively quick.

Any help would be appreciated.

20 minutes is not too long, you got to be a bit patient when it comes to running check links. I have seen check links running for hours sometimes

Now there are two things that I would like to shed a light upon, the first thing is to check the SQL profiler for the specific user running the check links, if you see activity then you are on the safe side. The other advice is to have check links scheduled to run at night, leave it running over night and get to see the results the other day, this will ensure that no issues are encountered and check links process is given the required time to complete with no interruption.

Final note, never interrupt check links when it is running by forcing the application to close, this will result with sever damages in your data.

Never hesitate to share any further inquiries,

    Hi Mahmoud,

    Thank you for the direction.

It's now been more than 5 hours and I still cannot close GP.

I've looked through the profiler (using the default template) and there seems to be no activity at all on the DB in question (other than SQL Agents running backups).  I wanted to be certain that I was using the trace tool correctly.  So, I logged into the DB and issued a query against the DB and the query was indeed reflected in the trace.

So, with that being said, are there any other suggestions you could give me?  Do you think it's safe to terminate the GP client that had initiated the Check Links?  Apparently this is NOT normal.  But, have there been instances when this does occur?

    Thanks for your help.

Well, it's been all night and the error is still occurring.

I've taken the company off-line to new users until I can determine if the problem is resolved.

If someone could please give me some idea as to any tests I can perform to determine if any corruption has evolved and whether I need to restore from a previously saved DB.

    Thanks.

    What is the error?

Check Links running all night is not 'abnormal' by processing standards as a lot depends on how big your database is, how many tables you selected and how many records it needs to process.

I recently ran Check Links against 3 Sales tables and it ran more than 12 hours.  Mahmoud is absolutely correct in his statement of abnormally terminating Check Links.  If the process hasn't finished completely, you could ended up with more damaged data.

When you look at Process Monitor in GP, does it show it's still running?

As I mentioned above GP will not let the user (sa) that started the Check Links process log out of GP  with "Processes are currently being run that cannot be deleted.  These processes must be run to completion before you exit."

And, as I mentioned SQL does not seem to be performing any actions against the Company DB.  The company DB is not very large and has been active since the start of the year.

I seem to be able to run reports as (sa) on the client without issue.  I certainly do not want to corrupt any tables.  But, I seem to be in limbo at the moment.

If you can point me to which process I should be monitoring for activity I would appreciate it.

The particular message being displayed is normal and not really an error message; it's a warning message.

Does the process still show in GP's process monitor?

I just thought of a possible issue that may have caused this hang-up.  Is it possible that the routine completed but never printed the results due to a corrupted print job??  If so, is there a way to verify this?

    HI Sean,

Can you please let me know the specific process to be reviewed?

It's possible a corrupted print job could be the hang up.   Can you post a screen shot of the Microsoft Dynamics GP >> Process Monitor window?

    Hi Sean,

Sorry for the delay..  See below for Process Monitor for workstation in question:
