How to copy all fields and customization from one environment to the other?

What is the best way to copy everything from my prod environment down to my dev environment as I want to make them the same, currently they are not.  Is it just that I go into my prod environment and open up the Customize the System and do an export?  I tried that and do an import in my other environment there are always failures.  Just wondering if there is another way or what is the best way.

Thank you.

If using online instance, you can use minimal copy feature from admin center.

    This would be for on-prem.

    Hi ,

What type of solution in your prod env you have imported ?

You should have/create unmanaged solutions and add all the entities  in the solutions to export from the source and import to your target env.

The solution is unmanaged, but every time I try to import it to my other environment, it always fails.  Without knowing the details, I would imagine I would have to dig into each error, correct?  Was just wondering if there is something that would just force the changes and apply them.

For on-premise, you can make a copy of the database to your dev environment SQL instance, and then import it in the Deployment Manager on your dev CRM server.  That will bring over the settings and data as well as the configuration.

Try to check  CRM app server event viewer / trace log .

Another option would be organization import taking DB backup -
