Integrate data on prem SQL Server to D365

Hello,

We have a situation where we have to interface externally available data on an ON-PREM Sql Server into D365 as a Demand Forecast data.
This could typically be 10000 rows of data. Frequency of Push can be 1-2 times during a week in the middle of the day as well.

The approach we have been advised it to create zipped excel files based on the on prem sql server data and push it into the the Blob storage using API. From here on the Azure services would pick it up and integrate it into D365 via the application layer. When pushed to find another solution where we can have SQL to SQL connection somehow, we were also told that MS FLOW and/or power automate would take hours to inject such kind of data.

Is that accurate? Can someone please shed some light on why such tools/applications like MS Flow and power automate are slow (if that's true Infact)?

Thanks,
Sumit

    Hi Sumit,

Can you indicate what type of data should be moved from your on-prem SQL server to Dynamics 365? Power Automate is connecting using OData calls which is not designed for high performance. For sure, a file based integration for 10000 rows will be quicker compared to OData.

    Hi Andre,

The data we are planning to move is planned shop order or batch order information which needs to be refreshed everytime we push it to D365. This would serve as the demand for MRP to happen on the raw material level.

But since deleting and refreshing batch orders in D365 would be a resource intensive task it was decided to interface this data as demand forecast into D365 which would then as well work like a demand to generate planned batch order to eventually generate the MRP.

Based on the above, is power automate or any other connector based application still not a viable solution?

    Thanks,

    Sumit

    Hi Sumit,

In the documentation provided above, you can read about the performance indications for each option. If you don't expect you will hit the numbers as mentioned for OData, you can use Power Automate. Ensure you perform a test the required performance.

    Hi Sumit,

In my experience, such a huge amount of data processing within Power Automate will be slow. We had a requirement where we were supposed to take a csv file from SFTP and then process the records within it to send it to D365FO. But csv had 400 columns. The power automate used to take an hour for processing just 300 records due to number of columns.

So what we did was to create a file table inside FNO where we push entire  content of the file to the table and do all the processing within the FNO system.

We also had a requirement where we actually took the data from On prem SQL server and pushed the fetched records in JSON format to that file table and did all processing inside FNO.

In my opinion if you dont want to export data to excel and then use recurring integration to import data, then the above option could be useful.
