CRM 2011- can one CRM has 2 root business units?

Hi guys,

Long time ago when we implemented CRM, we have only one root BU let's call it ABC which works perfectly well. Now we want to introduce a new business unit to existing CRM, let's call it XYZ. The requirement is users under ABC can only see records for ABC. Users under XYZ can only see XYZ records. ABC and XYZ are independent of each other. How can I make it happens? I try to create XYZ, but it asks me to assign a parent BU to XYZ and ABC is the root BU. Does it mean if I assign ABC as parent BU for XYZ, users under ABC can also see records of XYZ?

Any chance I can have 2 root BU in one CRM instance?

Cheers

You can't have 2 root BU in CRM, and users can't have 2 business units either.

    What you can do:

    - Rename ABC as "Root"

    - Make ABC a child of Root

    - Create XYZ and make it a child of Root

    Then:

    1. Check the your user's security roles to check if their only have "Business Unit" or "Business Unit: Child Business Unit" privileges for the access rights (read, write...) of the entities you want to restrict access to.

    2. Move your ABC users from Root to ABC. Careful: this will reset their security roles so make sure you reconfigure them

    3. Create and configure your XYZ users under the XYZ Business Unit.

Again, be careful, I would suggest you try and test this on a copy of your production environment to make sure you don't encounter bugs. System Admins should remain at the Root BU.

    Hi -

I think you can create a new parent business unit[ROOT] and add ABC and XYZ as child business units of that parent and grant BU level access to security roles created for the users.

simple answer to this is NO. In Dynamics crm only one root is allowed. However to achieve this you can create Business Units and play with security roles.
