Adding additional data alongside related records in a form

We have an entity (called Investment Portfolio) onto which contacts can be added referentially. Multiple contacts can be added to a portfolio, and also each contact can be linked to multiple portfolios.

When adding, say, five contacts to a portfolio, we want to be able to label each contact as related to the portfolio. For example, one contact might be the primary portfolio owner, another might be secondary and all the others might be "other".

But the same contact might be the primary portfolio owner for portfolio A, but the secondary on portfolio B. So we are trying to find a way, when lookup up a contact on a portfolio record, to add this extra information.

I have struggled to find a way to do this using normal relationships. Is Connections the way to go, or is there a way to add extra information for each contact linked to the portfolio record?

With thanks

James

    Hello James;

    Absolutely connections would be a great way of explaining this relationships. I'd recommend reading up about them here: msdn.microsoft.com/.../gg328381.aspx. It even mentions:

    - The ability to create connection roles that describe the relationship between two records, such as a relationship between a doctor and a patient, or a manager and an employee.

    - A quick way to create multiple connections and roles for a particular record. For example, a contact may have many relationships with other contacts, accounts, or contracts. In each relationship a contact may play a different role.

    The alternative option to this would be a custom M:M relationship between a custom linker entity between the Investment Portfolio and contacts. It could have a field describing this role as well if connections didn't work.
