Wondering if there is a way to auto populate the Related Account field on the Connections record. I tried with a workflow, but that didn't seem to work. Is there any other way?

AFAIK there is no Related Account field in Connection record OOB. So it seems that you customized that entity. Can you please describe what exactly you did and what is the scenario you try to achieve.
Also would be good to see screenshots of workflow that you did to understand your goal better.
Above are the pics. So when I am I on the account record, and click on the subgrid for connections, and click connection, the related account doesn't get filled in.
Can you please explain what is "Related Account" field - is it custom or renamed standard?

To be honest it has not.
I am not sure if it is a renamed field or custom. I am assuming custom, but not sure how to tell.
