SQL Server Express 2008 R2 Installation

Hello Everyone,

- New RMS install on a 64-bit machine running Win7 Pro.
- RMS is 32-bit and the SQL Server Express 2005 is also as it came from the install of the RMS Trial Version.

When bringing all the RMS/SQL Server Express software into present time if I do a fresh install of SQL Server Express 2008 R2, will I have any issues with installing the 64-bit version or should I stick to 32-bit keeping RMS and SQL Server in the same "bit" world?

Kind of a lame question as I wouldn't think there would be a problem but my IT experience is dated in the land of 32-bit.

Thanks in Advance for the Help,
Sue

We install RMS on 64-bit OS all the time, and is officially supporte by MS as well.

Thanks, Mike.  I guess I'm ultimately wondering if 32-bit RMS will play happily with 64-bit SQL Server Express 2008 R2.  As I said before I would think so but I'm just wanting to cover the bases. :)

We are running multiple stores on SQL Server Express 2008 R2. The 10 GB store database limit is well worth it for us at least.  Make sure to install SQL 2005 Backwards compatibility (DMO Objects only required) on EVERY computer running Store Ops / POS. Available for download in 32 and 64 bit versions if you have a mix of equipment.

Thanks to Jeff from Checkpoint for that advice months ago!

    Hi, everbody!

One issue that is missed here may be important (or not!!). Some add-on programs may not work because of the different program file folders and the dual registry.

You may have a 64 bit machine- But if memory serves correctly your RMS is probably store in the folder Program Files (x86) - Which is where all the 32 bit software that will run on a 64 bit machine is stored.

If this is the case you want the 32 bit- Also, we just had to install 2008 and I found it a lot easier to just let the RMS cd install 2005 then run the 2008 upgrade instead of the full install.

This enable me to skip the part of knowing how to make the RMS talk to the fresh install of SQL2008.

This was on a solo machine so it may be different for you, but just wanted to toss that out there.

    Good luck.

@ Jerry, don't install the programs in the default location then.  Install them off the root of C:\.  DRS has done this as an example.

@Frank, you really should go through and set the machine as though its on a network. If you decide to add a machine, you may not remember that you just set it up as a single station and it will drive you batty.

    Hello, Everyone,

Thank you for your individual responses.  I ended up taking the easy way out, by allowing the updating 2005 with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express since RMS was already installed and brought up to date with FP1 and SP4.

If I had to do it all over again I would have removed RMS 2.0 & SQL Server 2005 Express and then installed SQL Server 2008 Express 64-Bit and then installed RMS 2.0 which would have built all the database entities via the install and then applied RMS FP1 and SP4.

    Thanks again,

    Sue
