Adding "registration keys" feature to your app

I need to add a kind of "reg key" mechanism to some apps. I'm trying to come up with an approach or model that will accommodate both Dexterity enhancements to Great Plains as well as apps/utilities created via other tools (Visual Studio, web apps, etc). Granted I may need a separate mechanism for each type of app but thought I'd try to kill two birds.

Any thoughts or insights?

BTW, I'm not looking for advice/suggestions on how GP's reg key system works, the pros/cons of GUIDs, 128-bit security, site certs, etc. More, how the two kinds of apps could use the same underlying mechanisms to enforce their own registration criteria.

Thanks in advance.
