Can anyone provide reasons why one would use SmartConnect from eOne as opposed to eConnect from Microsoft? Is there additional functionality?

Richard, both SmartConnect and eConnect are eOne products.  SmartConnect leverages eConnect functionality and wraps it in a more user-friendly interface providing more or less drag and drop integration development, sort of like the Scribe UI.

Frank, so if you already have an established integration and code for your eCommerce website using eConnect there would be no reason to switch to SmartConnect and have to upgrade your code?

I would say not Richard.  eConnect is still used extensively for this type of integration.

I read in another post that you need Smart Connect to access and update Extender data. Will eConnect also let me access and update Extender data?

I'd like to add some clarification here, as we use SmartConnect in daily basis. Adding to what Frank said, SmartConnect is an eOne Solutions product but eConnect is Microsoft's. What SmartConnect does is take advantage of eConnect to deliver data to GP in a more hassle free and user friendly way. You can still use eConnect without SmartConnect, you just need to stick to the predefined schemas availables for each module.

The advantage of SmartConnect is that you can use it integrate data to any database, not only GP or other Dynamics ERPs and this can be done as easy as dropping an Excel file in a predefined folder in your network.

As for Extender, it is also an eOne Solutions product and you need SmartConnect to upload data, but once again, you can use any mean to integrate data to GP, its just that SmarConnect makes it easier.
