Using the CRM Email Router 2013 while still using CRM Online 2011

We are currently using CRM Online 2011 and have a planned upgrade date in February to CRM 2013. We currently use CRM Email Router 2011 on-premise.

It sounds like CRM Online 2013 will require the new CRM Email Router 2013 software. My problem is that I'm trying to avoid extra steps to complete after our CRM 2013 upgrade. Is it possible to replace/install the CRM Email Router 2013 now and use it with CRM Online 2011? Then later CRM Online 2013? After reading Microsoft's CRM Email Router Installation Guide, it is still unclear to me if the new CRM Email Router 2013 will work against our existing CRM 2011 versus 2013
