Hello,
After installing the GP 2015 R2 and running utilities, the company databases seem to upgrade but when it is done with the last screen the progress box goes away and leaves me with a gray screen with only the GP Utilities window. It took about an hour to upgrade the 5 databases I had and then I waited over 10 hours and nothing else happened. I checked SQL profiler and there was nothing running. I ended up killing it and all seemed well as I could log into GP and run everything but it was very disheartening to not have any successful notifications. I got this with both the R2 RTM 14.00.0725 as well as the July 30th Hotfix 14.00.0804. I am running SQL 2014 on Windows 2012 R2 server. I was upgrading GP from GP 2013 R2.
Any ideas on why this would do that?
Thanks,
Greg

While upgrading my test DB to GP2015 I had the same issue. There didn't seem to be any harm when I killed the process after waiting an hour. I also had nothing going on after running profiler. I have done hundreds of upgrades also this is my first experience with the great gray ghost of a wall.
A little unnerving, considering.
Yes my upgrades finished every time but ending with a blank grey screen and needing to kill GP utilities is never fun when I cant find the cause. There is no error so there is it is difficult to troubleshoot.
Yes, this has happened to me as well. Numerous times with GP2015 R2
Derek already answered, but here is a blog as well that talks about how to determine if your upgrade has finished or not.
Hello Greg,
What you're most likely seeing is after the DYNAMICS system database completes the upgrade and/or after the company databases complete the upgrade, before it goes to the Additional Tasks window, you may be seeing the window that gives you the option to deploy the SQL SRS and/or Excel Reports for that version of Dynamics GP.
Unfortunately, at times, we see it show either as a completely blank screen or the other thing we've seen is that it will show the window, but then won't allow you to click Next or any other button to get past that window and in both cases, you simply need to kill Utilities via Task Manager, and then launch GP Utilities again to verify the upgrade has completed, as it should do the version checks and then take you back to the Additional Tasks window.
I've seen this in both Dynamics GP 2013/R2 and Dynamics GP 2015/R2.
Thanks,
Hi,
Do you delete all records from DU000030 table before each upgrade/update?
Thanks,
Jorge
Greg.
What's in your DB_Upgrade and DU000020 table? Do those tables reflect the new version and build?
Kind regards,
Leslie
Hi Jorge,
Unfortunately there are no menus. Only the title bar at the top with Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities with the Minimize, Restore and X to close on the upper right and the program icon on the left. Something else that is weird too is that this behavior of the progress box that lists all the steps it does while upgrading a company will disappear no matter if I am adding a module like project accounting or doing a hotfix or dot release upgrade.
Thanks,
Greg
Hi Greg,
Do you have the 'Debug' menu on the top left corner of the GP Utilities window when it hangs?
Thanks,
Jorge
Has anyone else run into this? I even restored the databases back and tried to run utilities on another machine and got the same result. This is not the usual "looks like it is hanging" behavior as it sat idle for over 10 hours after all the companies were upgraded. The weird thing to point out is that when it appeared to hang, there was not progress box or anything - only the main utilities background screen. When I tried to close it - it stated that processes were running and the application could not be closed. But again I opened SQL profiler and watched it and there was nothing going on.
Thanks again for any assistance.
Greg
