How to Conversion of our D365 tenant to the new storage model

Posted on by 5

Hello all,

We are currently using the old D365 Customer Engagement storage model for our D365 environment. These are IUR licenses from our Microsoft Gold partnership:
Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Plan IUR for Partners, 60 seats that will expire on 1/8/2021.
Dynamics 365 - Additional Database Storage (Qualified Offer), 1 seat that will expire on 25/6/2021
Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online 1-Seat for Partners, 1 seat that will also expire on 25/6/2021

tenant situation is:

According to our idea, the change to the new storage model should be enough for us to get enough space for our sandbox environment again:

Unfortunately, neither our partner nor Microsoft support could help us. Our question is, what is the best (cheapest) way to move our storage model? As far as I know we have to buy a temporary licence or? Do we need a specific licence or is there another way?

    Hi Christoph,

I am in the same situation as you were before. Are you able to tell me the results of what happened?

    Thanks!

RE: How to Conversion of our D365 tenant to the new storage model

    Hey Christoph.

According to the information you're reflecting, by moving to the new storage type, logs & File should be covered for you (you're using 1GB of log and 3.4GB of file).  The main issue is going to result on Database capacity.

From your information you're using 11.2GB on Production plus another 11.2GB on Sandbox. That would be 22.4GB.  If you add the default environment (usually around 1-1.5GB) you would be around 24GB.  Also keep in mind that if you want to perform copies or restores, you should also have at least 1GB of database capacity available plus the size you want to copy. That would make +25GB required.  Also you should keep in mind that depending on usage you'll require more storage

The new storage model will grant you: 10GB of default database capacity. If you have enterprise licenses (Customer Engagement or Sales Enterprise, etc), you're also entitled to an additional 1/4GB per user on Database capacity and 2GB of Log Capacity.

    From this:

    10GB Of default capacity plus (60 users at 250MB) = 10GB + 15GB = 25GB.   I think this would be "just in the limit"

According to the documentation on Legacy storage capacity - Power Platform | Microsoft Docs, "Dynamics 365 - Additional storage (Qualified offer)" is a legacy license. If you keep this license you'll be kept on legacy storage. If you want to move to new storage model this license should not be renewed/extended/purchased.  In order to cover any additional storage, you would need to purchase either:

    - more user licenses (4 user licenses would grant 1GB)
    - there's a license named "Common Data Service Database capacity" or "Dataverse Database capacity".  Each unit of this license would grant you 1GB of Database capacity
