Increasing the description field on a PO

Posted on by 310

I've been asked if we can increase the field for descriptions on PO's.  Buyers would like to add longer descriptions.

Is this possible or is the description field a set number of characters?

    Hi,

Don't forget that although the item description field is 100 characters, report writer will not print a string field that long. You'll need to parse the string into two fields using a Report Writer user-defined function.

    Kind regards,

    leslie

I think, adding Notes to the line item description is the best option for the users without creating any customization or extender.

    Hello All,

I guess, it is also possible to save all the item descriptions by adding Extender screen to this window

    or

Through dexterity we can create a custom screen save all the individual item detail description to custom tables

We can change the length of Item Description field. If you change the item description field length, you must re-created all the tables what all are contains the same description field. So, this not a advisable solution.

Item description field allows maximum of 100 character, if you want to enter more details in the PO line item description field, better select the line item the click the note icon to enter your full description for each of the line items. But, you can't add the note for non-inventory items.

    Hope this helps!!!

"Note" field is always a very good alternative, you could easily add note field to the report writer by a simple modification and it could handle thousands of characters.

Ok thank you...will check the item card description...but had a feeling it's limited to so many characters.

Have you checked the item card description, for the number of characters that can be entered ?

That's the limit, and it simply cannot be changed.

The bottom line is, you just can not change the length of the standard out of the box Dynamics GP fields.

To add further fields and information for Dynamics GP forms in general, the Extender is one of the best solutions you could consider.

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,

In case the item is inventorial, the description is retrieved from the item card level. In GP 2013, it is 100 characters. I am not sure about previous versions.

In case the item is non-inventory, the description can be set on the purchase order level and it is 100 characters as well.

Can you check that on your GP version.

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,
