D365F&O Production Process

Hello! We use D365F&O and use operations scheduling. We created production orders from sales orders using the create production order menu item. Today, we create production orders, estimate and then start them. Operations scheduling happens when we move from estimate to start. We do have pegged supply items in BOMs, so often child production orders are created. I am looking to streamline this in D365 and go straight from created to started.

I have updated the parameters to allow me to go from created to started, as well as toggled on references for default values for started, so when the parent is started, it generates a child that is started. What I am confused on, is where the raw material date comes from on these orders. It seems, when I estimate them first and then move to started, the raw material date is correct, and when I move from created to started, the raw material date is not correct.

Example: Current behavior: Created orders, I have a production order with a delivery date of 5/23. We estimate the order, and it generates a child order that has a delivery date of 5/16. Start the orders, and the raw material date on the child production order is 5/16, which is correct.

Future behavior-moving from created to started: Created orders and have a production order with a delivery date of 5/23. Start the orders, a child is created with a delivery date of 5/16, but the raw material date on the BOM of the child is 5/23, instead of 5/16-showing the demand after the delivery date of the production order itself.

Is it possible to move from created to started and get the correct raw material date? It seems it is using the delivery date from the parent to determine the raw material date on the child instead of the child's delivery date. This process takes some time to run for us, so was hoping to not have to run the estimation, and just going to started will encompass the estimation step.

    Hi,

Yes, you're correct — when you skip the Estimation step and go directly from Created to Started, D365 F&O does not always calculate the raw material date based on the child production order's delivery date. Instead, it uses the parent order's delivery date, which results in incorrect material demand timing.

This happens because the estimation step triggers the requirement date calculation for BOM components. Without it, the child order is created but raw material dates may not align properly.

Recommendation: If accurate raw material dates are critical, consider either:

Keeping the estimation step (even in batch), or

Creating a customization or batch job to trigger material requirement date recalculation after child orders are created.

Unfortunately, there’s no standard way to replicate this estimation logic when skipping it entirely.

    Hope that helps!

    Zain
