CRM Upgrade Guide 2013 to 365

Hi All,

I am looking for some straight forward guides out there which detail the exact steps and requirements needed to upgrade 2013 all the way to the latest version of CRM currently, I understand there are some kicking around but preffered if there any YouTube videos anyone has stumbled across of someone actually doing a step for instance rather than just talking through screen slides?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated, if there any guides or blogs anyone has stumbled across which has greatly helped them then please let me know too :)

Andrew

    Hello,

    I suggest you check the steps for the Migration Upgrade from this official guide: download.microsoft.com/.../How%20to%20Prepare%20for%20the%20Upgrade%20to%20CRM%202013%20(on-premises).pdf

    Even though it shows the steps how to upgrade to CRM 2013 the principle is the same. You need separate environments where you can import the Organization DB and let it upgrade.

    I suggest you don't do an InPlace Upgrade on prod - if something goes wrong you can end up with a lot of down time.

    And make sure to take a full CRM DB copy before each upgrade step.

    Hope this helps,

    Radu

    Thanks Radu, seems pretty comprehensive but from first glance it seems to talk to you like you have done upgrades before? This will be my first ever upgrade so not entirely sure where to start let alone how to physically upgrade from one to another etc.. is there any other guides out there?

    The upgrade path is pretty simple.  Upgrade to CRM 2016, then Upgrade to D365 on-premises.

    Caveats:

    1. Make sure any managed solutions you're using have 365 compatible updates

    2. Make sure you catalog any custom javascript and plugins you have created, because they're going to need to be redeveloped

    3. Make sure to review new functionality from the last couple of release notes here (for on-prem): docs.microsoft.com/.../index;panel=products1

    Steps 1 and 2 are going to be unique to your instance, so there's really not much to video.  Step 3 is optional and only if you want to use the new stuff.  If you're just updating for compatibility and support, you could push that off until later.

    Thanks for the reply, do you know of a good website which shows in detail the server requirements for each step

    So presumably I will need to do the following but need to know the steps required:

    1. Back up CRM 2013 database

    2. Export Encryption key from 2013

    3. Install CRM 2016

    4. Use Deployment Manager to import old DB? (not sure on this step)

    5. Import old encryption key

    Not DB up to 2016 so need to do the exact same steps for 2016 --> 365?

    Current Requirements:

    Server where CRM 2013 is currently on:

    OS = Windows Server 2012 R2

    SQL = Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP3) (KB3072779) - 11.0.6020.0 (X64)

    Destination Server where 365 will end up

    OS = Windows Server 2016

    SQL = Microsoft SQL Server 2017 (RTM-GDR) (KB4293803) - 14.0.2002.14 (X64)
