SL Screens are VERY SLOW to Open!

Why are certain screens VERY SLOW to Open?

1) MOST IMPORTANTLY (for me), certain REPORT SCREENS (not all) are just so slow to open that I have to go do something else and come back...  It is terrible.

2) I had a user today who was trying open a MAINTENANCE SCREEN and it just wouldn't open.  Others can open it fine, but this one doesn't open.  It is not an access rights issue (she is actually an admin in our IT group).  She was on a Terminal Services box.

Will the HOT FIX for "menu maintenance" fix these types of issues?  Are we alone with this issue?  Any other ideas about what else we can try?  (If anyone has applied that HOT FIX, do you have to apply to the SERVER, AND all the CLIENT installations/machines.  If so, is it required that you run on EVERY client machine, or can we just run as necessary.  We have a lot of client installs and I don't want to have to go around to every machine...)

What version are you running?  We are on 7.0 FP1, and it is unbelievably slow... we tried most of the suggestion in the knowledgebase, but nothing has worked for us.

We are also now on 7.0 FP1 and overall it isn't too slow for us.  It is just certain screens have been taking a while to open.  If you check out the following post on this forum it may have some other useful information to help you with performance....  https://community.dynamics.com/forums/p/3315/32770.aspx#32770.  (The author of that post (Gail) is a great resource!  Gail's company is also on 7.0 FP1.  She is also an officer of the "SL Users Group" which meets annually....this year in San Diego, CA.  She and other users are there to help users with advice, tips and tricks, etc....)

I'm not an infrastructure guy, but if you are interested I can post our infrastructure details to give you a sense of what we are doing....  I know we are SQL Server 2005.  Let me know if you want more details.  Good luck....

I've heard that going to Control Panel / Internet Options / Advanced Tab / Under the Security Heading

There is an option "Check for server certificate revocation" that is supposed to be unchecked and that theoretically is supposed to speed things up.  But I haven't really noticed a difference, but hey its worth a shot.

We do not have these settings checked and our system (Sl 7.0FP1) is incredibly slow as well.  I would appreciate ANY means to increase performance.  We are running new hardware as well and still have very slow software responses.

My users are also experiencing slowness too. Here is a little information about my environment.  I think it would help if everyone who is having these issues would post similar information about their environment.  The screen that seems to be the slowest is the Sale Order Entry screen: (40.100.00).

    •  File server/App Tier
      • VMware ESX 3.5 - Virtual machine - 1vCPU - 1GB ram
      • Windows Server 2008 - Standard 32-bit
      • Multi-User installation of SL 7.0 FP1
      • Windows Authentication
    • SQL Server/Datbase Tier
      • HP DL380 G5 - 8 cores - 8GB ram
      • Windows Server 2008 - Standard 64-bit
      • SQL Server 2008 - Standard 64-bit
    • Clients
      • Both Vista and XP workstations are slow
      • Dynamics Mapped/installed through file server
      • Have tested turning off client antirvirus network scanning

Who all is using Windows Authentication?

Yep, my users are all complaining of slow loads on most of the screens.   We recently upgraded from 6.5 sp1 to 7.0fp1 and everyone has complained about the performance.  It is not soooooo slow that I have a riot on my hands, but it is noticeably slower that previous version.

I found a knowledgebase article covering numerous issues on V7.0 perfomance that might be of some value:

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/knowledgebase/kbdisplay.aspx?wtntzsmnwukntmmyszrrnottukoostllwvntsqosutnmwwlk

Here is a list of FP1 hot fixes to consider:

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/downloads/hotfixes/slhotfixlist.htm?printpage=false&stext=windows authentication slow#hf70fp1

We have worked over our system while troubleshooting numerous issues related to performance, and have resolved most of them.   To do it, we had to involve the hardware team as several of the issues had to be corrected at OS, Terminal Server global and user global levels.  (i.e. outside the scope of what the software folks are allowed to work on).

However, I couldn't find the one that we worked on as a Beta user on V7.0 FP1.   The general issue was that when using Windows Authentication, the SQL code was quite inefficient in opening screens.   I can't identify the hot fix for that at the moment, but you can get it from Tech Support.

The big ones that worked for us was the login/authentication fix and turning on "Delete temporary folders on exit" in Terminal Server configurations (article number 947418).

Alternatively, you can look at your overall infrastructure/hardware architecture.   How many users do you have?   Are you running the terminal server on the same box as the SQL server with them both on a virtualized machine (can you spell S-L-O-W?)?   Cutting corners on hardware is a sure way to get slow performance as well.   We make a point of running our SQL server on biggest/baddest box (by itself) we can find; we try to limit terminal server boxes to ~20 concurrent users (they say you can have lots more users but it's not our experience).

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Gail J-N
