Shipment creation without sales order

For dynamics 365 finance and operations, how to create a shipment directly in the transportation module without sales or purchase order? There is a "New" button in the shipments page, but it is disabled by default. I want to do so as I am not concerned in including the items in the inventory first as I am not the manufacturer, I just want to get the shipment from the vendor and track the transportation till it reaches the customer.

Thanks in advance.
I have the same question (0)

Since the "New" button is disabled by default, you'll need to enable it. Go to the Shipments page and modify the page properties to enable the "New" button.

@VaHiX Thanks for your reply, but do you mean doing this programmatically to enable that standard button?

I enabled the button from the datasource (Where I set AllowCreate to yes), but it seems that this only adds shipment with no data and it is not even editable, so is that the right approach to achieve that?

    Hi!
As I aware, you can not create shipment manually without sales or purchase order.
It's just a standard form template used, that contain a "+New" button", but in datasource for this form "Allow creation" = No.

    Hi!
No, it is not the right aproach to enabled the button from the datasource. It desabeled because it is not correct to create shipment without source document.
What is the process you try to automate where you need to create a sipment without source?

    Hello @Peter Kulikov (N.progression),
what I need to do is to just transport goods as a shipping company (so I am not the manufacturer nor the seller). I want to provide transportation services for clients and track their shipments (without the need to keep track of the items inside the shipments). The issue with using sales orders is that it forces adding items to the order lines (from my inventory) but in the real case, I don't have the items on my inventory, and I don't want to keep track of each item.

    Thank you.

If you dont want to affect inventory, i really think you need to look at a different solution and abandon "shipment" for your requirement.

You are selling a transportation service, so why not sell a service item (no inventory) or sales categories and use sales orders rather than shipments?  From there, you can creatively use Sales Order status and Requested and Confirmed dates to track.

In the end, you will invoice your customers so rather than using Free text invoice you could use Sale order invoice.

@Danny Bilodeau Thanks that was really helpful.
But the issue is that I want to track the shipments inside the loads and use the capabilities of the transportation module (Bill of lading, tracking, routes, ...etc.).

So, is there a way to create shipments from service items (or sales categories) where the quantity is for the items included in that transportation service?

    Hi again YB,

If you really must use D365 F&O for this, there might be another way. I successfully tested the following in a Contoso environment. I never used this approach in Production, but this would be a starting point:

    1. Create a service item configured as follows:
    • Product Type = Service
    • Product Sub-type = Product
    • Item Model Group setup with "Stocked Product = Yes".
    • Storage Dimension Group enabled for Site & Warehouse;
    • Tracking dimension = None
    • Use Transport Management Processes = Yes
    • Navigate to the Product to add a NMFC (to generate the BoL)
    2. Create a Sales Order with that Item
    3. From Outbound Load Planning workbench, create a new load for that SO line
    4. Release the load to warehouse. No work will be created but the release process will create a shipment
    5. Perform rating & routing ( I did manual rating)
    6. Confirm outbound shipment
    7. Generate a BOL.
    8. Invoice the SO without posting a packing slip or deducting inventory.

See if that works for you.

    Danny
