Credit Cards in RMS with Windows XP will be non-PCI Compliant after April 8th

Posted on by 908

If your machines are running Microsoft XP operating system to run RMS, and if you use the RMS software to processes credit cards via EDC, your machines will be considered non-PCI compliant, as XP is no longer a supported platform. This change will take effect on 8th April 2014.  Please be aware as this exposes the retailer to more liability in the case of a data breach.

In readiness of this, I'm going to install Windows 7 on each machine. The downside is that to migrate from Windows XP to Vista, 7, or (shudder) 8 requires a clean install, meaning  that RMS, and everything else needs to be installed from scratch onto the new OS.  My HQ Server, Store Servers-- everything is running on XP now.  Any advice for making this as smooth as possible?

You  may want to consider taking the Computer out of Scope by using an encrypted terminal like Ingenico  or

    Magtek IPAD

Thanks for the suggestion; our store server is a separate machine in the manager's office. :)

Installing from an image is a thought... I don't have quite that many machines, or much in the way of resources for this project, but I'll look into that as a possibility!

We are in the same situation. We have around 350 registers across 59 stores. I am preparing an image of Windows Embedded POSReady 7 with RMS installed. The OS is 7 stripped down so it runs a little smoother than vanilla 7. I will get my team to do one store at a time as each register will have to be configured by hand after imaging.

We run our store SQL database on a separate server - meaning its not a register and not on XP, its a racked server in each store. If you have the resources, you might want to consider setting up a separate database server, it makes things much easier. Even if its just a spare workstation, it could help.

    Hello Taier,

    Thank you for your questions.

The easiest way would be to make a backup of your databases before beginning the process, and upgrading the computers outside of business hours. You can complete this one store at a time, move the data over, reconfigure RMS to point to the new store database and then begin business operations during the regular hours.

I would recommend contacting your Microsoft Dynamics RMS partner if you need assistance with the install of RMS.

if you do not have one, you can find on at https://www.pinpoint.com.

    Thank you,
