Hello all -
We have Dynamics GP 9.0 SP1 (9.00.0259) installed in one domain that I need to move to a new domain, since renaming a SQL is not a good practice. In the process, i would like to upgrade to a more recent release (as 9.0 SP1 is about 12 SP/Releases behind 2010 R2). The original server was loaded on a Windows Server 2003 and SQL 2000. The new server is running Server 2008 R1 and SQL 2005. In order to restore the database to SP1 and go from there, I need to apply GP SP1 to the server, but the install msi keeps ending "prematurely", defaulting msiexec.exe".
The question, I guess is, do I need to go back to 2003 and SQL 2000 and upgrade from there or what would be the best solution?
Thanks in advance.
Jeff Garrison.

The SP is failing on the 2008 machine because SP1 for .NET 1.1 is not applied. Christian is correct though that GP 9 was never tested or supported on Windows 2008.
Yes, that is correct i found that the base would install but any service pack would fail. Again, that is why i go by the system requirements, and since it is not supported on windows 2008 i don't even bother. i simply use a different machine that is supported to conduct the install/update.
You would would not / should not have any issues with install GP 2010 on the Windows Server 2008 machine.
I feel better now, knowing that someone was having the same issue trying to get it to work on Windows Server 2008. Mine installed, but when I tried to apply SP!, it failed.
Jeff,
If you look at the System Requirements for GP 9.0 it is unfortunately not supported on Windows Server 2008, and i have had issues with the installation on that OS type myself.
Since you are using SQL 2005, you can always install GP 9.0 on a supported OS, such as Windows Server 2003 or a workstation running Windows XP or Vista and point it to the new Server running SQL 2005 to apply any patch for GP 9.0.
keep in mind that if you are upgrading to GP2010 also, then you would need to install / apply GP 9.00.0371 at a mimimum to upgrade to GP2010 R2 or the latest 11.00.1799.
Also depending on your scenario on affordable downtime, you might want to consider doing a test upgrade prior to a live upgrade.
Check out KB Article ID: 878449 which includes detailed instructions on how to move your GP install from one SQL server to another.
Kind regards,
Leslie
