Item code & Item Description

Hi All

I am trying to create Item master in demo company for Steel manufacturing/Sales industry.

The Item description/Name Comes with combo of Grade + Name + Length + Width + Thickness.

Below is the sample from online source.

Note :  Sales price may differ according to combination of Grade with different Length + Width + Thickness.

Question is which is the best Item no and Item description ?

Below is my assumption for item code and description design

1. An Item no with Grade + Name and item description with Grade + Name + Length + Width + Thickness.

The Advantage is the item name/Description will directly have length + Width + thickness, So easy for assigning different sales price and easy for user to choose in Sales line.

This Disadvantage is many Items needs to be created due to varying range of  length + Width + thickness and it all refers to same item but different specification.

PLs suggest scope of using Item attributes and other best way to accommodate Length + Width + Thickness in item card.

Yes if there are no standard with or thickness then you have a challenge.  If the thickness was standard you could have an item no. with the combination of grade and with.

It will require some customization to make Business Central the perfect solution for this industry. Kind of the same issue with the wood industry where you have all kinds of different dimensions of the same item.

Maybe it can be and idea to see if this add on might have some of the functionality you need:

    Thanks for your suggestion .

The Thickness as variant will have more control over sales price I hope. And I extended this solution and tried the below output (Same Item code- Item grade with different dimension)

So Item with different variant (Dimension) combo will get the correct price. I believe this stops from creating multiple item code for same Item Grade.

But seems there is no standard length or width as these are customizable as per Order placement. So even though Variant codes are created/predefined with various Dimension, new dimension requirement/order placement which is not in Variant code table shall be challenge.

Then i think i would create one item for every grade. Have thickness as your variant and then the length will be the stock keeping unit / Base unit of measure.

Because the length is typically what you order, so that will typically be your qty.

Unfortunately Business Central is not very ideal for these kind of setup.

Are the different grades being stored in fixed length or is the length a standard length and then being adjusted according to the order.

So is a an item typically 5000 mm standard length and if i order 2500mm they cut it in half for me or do they have all different lengths in inventory?

    Thanks for your response,

So I need to create item no with attributes according to changing Length + thickness + Width. Result may be many item no with different unique item attributes referring to same kind of Item ?.

Example: An Item - "216 Grade Steel" may have different item code/No with unique item attributes ?

    hi

applying solution 1 or solution 2 you would always have the same number of articles to create because the attributes can only be entered once, i.e. they are unique per article, so your discriminant should be Item Code: Grade + Name.

the cleanest solution in my opinion is to use Item attributes
