I would like to create a test environment, created from our current production environment. Does anyone have documentation on doing this?

Thanks.

Problem was with orphaned organization. During the import it was seeing the database from other organization. I disabled and deleted that organization and I was able to import the correct organization/database.

    Thanks for assistance thus far.

Restore of database was successful and I was able to import organization. However I am not able to see users that should should be there also there are views that aren't there either.  Ran bellow against prod and test and got the same results, so am confident that DB is correct. Any reason why I am seeing discrepancies?

select COUNT(*) from contact where contact.CreatedOn<'2014/02/04'

    1850551 rows

select COUNT(*) from salesorderbase where salesorderbase.CreatedOn<'2014/02/04'

    5601985 rows

    Hello,

You do not have to restore the MSCRM_Config DB but it is good to take a back up of the DB incase anything goes wrong.

As suggested above, create a new environment and then restore the backed up Production DB to the newly created one,

    Thanks,

Would this also require the _config database to be restored too?

To build a test environment, install the crm in the new environment.  Then backup and restore your production database to your test sql server.  You can then use the crm deployment manager to import the organization.  All customizations, plugins, reports, data are stored in the database.

This blog shows you how to create a new CRM instance on the same server

Essentially you can take a backup of your production _MSCRM database and restore it to the test environment. From there you can import that existing organization using Deployment Manager.

You can check out the documentation in the Implementation Guide
