What is the best practice of relating work orders

Although I'm working with FieldOne for a few months now I'm still pretty new to it. As of a week we are having our first case for a customer and I could use some help.

I would like to create a dependency between tasks on a work order (I think) so that task B can only be executed when task A is completed.

This is the situation:

The customer gets a request to do adjustments to cables in the ground. Therefore a hole needs to be digged and the adjustments to the cables needs to be done. Logically the adjustments to the cable can only be done when there is a hole in the ground.

Furthermore, the digging of the hole and the adjustments are done by different resources who are not on the same place on the same time.

Would you create two workorder schedules for one workorder? And the follow up question would be how do you make sure that a Dispatcher can only plan task / workorder schedule B after A is planned.

Thanks in advance

    Mark,

There are multiple ways this can achieved depending which route you want to follow.

Work Order schedules are only related to their parent Work Order and don't have no relationship among themselves. In your case you want to create WO schedules that is depe

    1) This option will require a plugin. As soon as Work Order Schedule A gets completed the plugin will look at the create follow up checkbox and the incident type, if they matches then a new Work order schedules gets created with different incident type (if you want to manage duration with an incident type) and then assign this Work Order schedule to resource. So your plugin will be responsible for creating Work Order schedules.

    2) The dispatcher needs to be aware of the WO where multiple WO schedules are required. And you create as many WO schedules as are required to complete the whole project. If these tasks takes more a day then you can create these WO schedules for subsequent days during the week.  For example WO schedule 1 for Monday and WO schedule 2 for Tuesday and then assign them to the appropriate Resource.

I hope I have answered your question, otherwise do let me know I can further assist you.

As Syed rightly said there are lots of possible approaches.

One option is multiple schedules on one work order but if they are separate jobs requiring different resource skills, maybe different price lists etc, you might also want to consider options of having two work orders.

Have you looked at follow up work orders? Job B could be a follow up work order from job A, maybe.

Also consider if using cases might help. As work orders can be associated with a case. So you could have one case with multiple work orders. Basically using the case  to group them together.

Maybe look at a workflow to create the second work order (or schedule if you go down that route) on completion of first job.
