Unable to change Item No. planning assignment already exists

Hello,

I am trying to change an Item number and am getting an error saying the "The record in table Planning Assignment already exists. Identification fields and values: Item No.='',Variant Code='',Location Code=''. How can I get rid of the error and change the Item No.?

That error usually happens when you try to rename an Item No. but there’s already a blank Planning Assignment record (in table 99000854) with no Item No., Variant Code, or Location Code. Here's how to resolve it:

Go to Table 99000854 - Planning Assignment Use Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or search for Table Information → enter table 99000854) Or go to Page Inspection → use ? → select Planning Assignment

Filter for Blank Item No. In the table, filter for: Item No. = '' Variant Code = '' Location Code = '' Delete the Blank Record : If you find a record with all those fields blank, delete it. This is often a leftover system glitch from planning or MRP runs.

Retry the Item No. Change Now go back and try renaming the item — it should work.

"The record in table Planning Assignment already exists" — means that there's an existing record in the Planning Assignment table that conflicts with your attempt to change the Item No.

Since the item is already linked to planning and other data, it's best to block the existing item and create a new one with the correct Item No. instead of modifying it directly. This avoids data issues and keeps historical records intact.

Hello,

You need to clear any existing records in the Planning Assignment table related to the item, update the Item No. in the Item Card, and then recreate the planning assignments for the new item number

Or Else

You can Block this Particular Item and Create New Item as the experts mentioned.
