Business Portal Install Questions

I'm trying to install BP4.0 on a web server. The SQL environment is setup as
a cluster/farm. (GPV10).

During the BP requirements pre-check - I get an error message that the
Number of Processors requirements failed.

I ignore that check and tried the install anyways (always the optimistic
person I am) and I get the error message:

"Your Operating system does not meet the requirements for Business Portal.
The supported systems are Windows Server 2003 (standard, enterprise, and web
Edition) and small business server 2003.

The web server is a Windows Server 2008 (32 bit install).

Basic questions -

1.  I noticed when I did my pre-check - I had to use the SQL DNS Name in
order to verify connectivity to the SQL server. Therefore, my question
is.........is BP supported in a SQL cluster/farm configuration?

2.  I was told if the web server has Windows 2008 - it had to be 32bit. Why,
then did I get the operating system error? Our server is 32bit.

3.  Minimum processors - does the web server have to have 2 processors?

Thanks in advance......

    Bron,

Thanks for the feedback.  BP is popular for customers that are trying to automate processes.  For example, BP provides the ability to create requisitions, create project timesheets and expense reports, and update an employee's personal information (to name a few).  It also makes most all information entered in Dynamics GP available through the browser.  I'd recommend researching it a little.  It definitely makes sense for some customers!

    Thanks

    Rob

Rob - thanks for your consistent assistance.

I ended up re-installing GP Web Services and was able to install BP4.0 - SP2.

The BP install actually went relatively smoothly - the person who had installed MOSS and sharepoint services did a great job - I didn't encounter any problems.

Business Portal seems like a quirky product. I have very very few clients that want to deploy it. It was pretty slow in my client environment and I'm not certain they will like the product or not.

    Thanks again........

    Bron,

There is probably nothing preventing you from having BP and Web Services share sites and app pools, however this is not a tested and supported scenario.  I'd recommend you uninstall and set up a separate site for web services.

    Thanks

The client is not using GP Web Services for any development purposes. Therefore, can I leave as is? Or would you still recommend that I uninstall GP Web Services and re-install?

I really hate the thought of uninstalling GP web Services and re-installing........it is recommended.......but it is required?

    Thanks,

    Bron

    Bron,

You're correct.  The recommendation is to have Web Services and Business Portal on different app pools.  If something within either app causes the app pool to go down, it shouldn't affect the other application.

No need to worry about the BP Prereq Checker warnings/errors.

    Thanks

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Business Portal Install Questions

Rob - Thanks for hanging with me on this thread. You have been great.

I was able to get GP Web Services installed. I had to use SP2 in order for the installer to recogonize that IIS7.0 was already installed.

    However, I have a question -

During the install of web services - I normally choose the default site and let GP Web Services create the site. However, since Sharepoint Services is being deployed (I'm never worked with Sahrepoint before) I choose the same site that was configured for Business Portal. I'm not certain - but I thought I read somewhere that web services should not use same application pool and site as Business Portal? I reviewed my install documents and could not find anything on point.

    Can you clarify?

Also - I ran the BP pre-check and I got these results........

Business Portal Prerequisite Checker Report Back Office Version:  Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0/Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0 Feature Pack 1 Date/Time:  8/23/2010 9:46:56 AM
    Summary
The following items will not prevent installation, but may affect Business Portal setup.

Processor Count - Below Minimum Site:

Default Web Site - SSL Enabled - Failed Site:

SharePoint Central Administration v3 - SSL Enabled - Failed Site:

Office Server Web Services - SSL Enabled - Failed Site:

    SharePoint - gpportal.ignition.bm80 - SSL Enabled - Failed Site:

    SharePoint - SSP24989 - SSL Enabled - Failed Site:

    SharePoint - MySites25191 - SSL Enabled - Failed Site:

Dynamics Security Admin Service - SSL Enabled - Failed

Is the Processor count or the SSL setup critical elements, in your opinion?

    Thanks in advance.......

    Bron,

Take a look at BusinessPortalInstallation.pdf.  It details some of the install dependencies.  Specifically, ASP.Net is a supcomponent of the web server role.  Regarding IIS 6.0, I believe you need the management compatibility component.

    Thanks

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Business Portal Install Questions

    Yet another hurdle.

I was able to add the role in Server Manager (quite easy).

Now I get message that IIS 6.0 and ASP.NET2.0 must be installed on computer before you can install GP Web Services.

IIS7.0 and ASP.NET is installed on this computer. From Administrative Tasks, I see IIS6.0 and IIS7.0. When I open IIS6.0 - there is no computer, application pools or default web sites set up.

In IIS7.0 everything is setup and ready to go.

I'm using GP Web Services V10 - install from the original CD (no SP's). The Web Services Install is not recoginizing IIS7.0.......

I searched Techknolwedge for soltion - no results. I searched for just Web Services SP2 - but could not find it - only SP4 which won't work unless we upgrade Dynamics to SP4 (on SP2 right now).

Any thoughts? I'm about ready to submit support request.......

Thanks again............hope you're having better day than me...........

    Bron,

That's a role that you'll need to add through Server Manager.

    Thanks

    Rob
