Having Database Restore Errors

(0) ShareShare

I am having a problem restoring a database. Basically I am switching from an older PC to a newer one. I am backing up my database on the old machine and trying to restore it to the new machine

The error msg states

The media family on device 'location of file' is incorrectly formed. Sql Server cannot process this media family

Restore Filelist is terminating abnormally.

Anyone have any solutions?

    Hello pr0ject004,

    Thank you for your questions.

This usually happens when the backup was made on a version of SQL that is newer than what is being used to restore the backup.

What version of SQL Server was used to make the backup? What version of SQL Server are you using now?

Please ensure that the version of SQL you are using to restore the backup is equal to or newer than the version that was used to make the backup.

Let us know if you have any questions.

    Trent,

I'm having the same problem with this, and it makes sense...we upgraded our server to SQL 2008 R2 about a year ago or so in order to take advantage of full blown SQL (instead of the 2005 express version that comes with RMS).  I'm trying to roll out a new store, so I made the new database on the server where RMS HQ exists.  When trying to restore it on the new store side, I get the same error...presumably because with the stores we still use the 2005 express that comes with the RMS install.

Question is, what would one suggest I do now?  On this specific store, perhaps replace 2005 express with 2008 express?  Ideas?  Thanks for the help.

    Eric,

When you install RMS, select the Skip button so it does not install SQL 2k5, which is no longer support by Microsft anyway.

Then install SQL 2008 R2 Express or better. If you seach the forum, you will find my step by step 2008 installation notes

After that, restore your backup to create your database.
