Customizing the Left Nav via Solution.

I need a little help and clarification with importing my solution with my site map customization.

I've created a new solution and included the site map in it. I've made all the changes that I want to the customizations.xml file. i have not imported the solution back in yet. My question is, how should I import it back in? As an unmanaged solution or a managed solution? I've done some research and most of the blogs / tutorials say to import it as an unmanaged solution. But what if i want to revert those changes on the left nav to reappear?

If I import as an unmanaged solution and publish it but then want to reverse those changes, can I delete or remove the component from the new solution and then delete the new solution to make the items on the left nav show up again?

Basically I just want to be able to test this out and revert back if i have to without anything remaining from the solution so that the default solution takes over again.

Thanks

    Hi,

If you don't want to update the sitemap for your organisation, you could import the solution as managed and will make it readonly, where you can delete the solution later on and it will delete all the changes you have made to the sitemap.

Where as an unmanaged solution should be used when you need to edit it. If you import an unmanaged solution and you decided to revert it by deleting the solution will not work. Because deleting the unmanaged solution will not delete the actual changes you have made to the entities, but will delete the solution reference only.

In case you are working on some development, I would suggest using an unmanaged solution.

But for test purpose you could try managed solution which will make it readonly and delete the solution for reverting it back and go on with editing the sitemap.

There is more information on this on latest CRM SDK. Got to Solutions, Concepts and you will get a better understanding of the managed vs unmanaged solutions.

    Hope this helps you.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the help.

I think I am starting to understand now.

Since I am working in development, I should use an unmanaged solution because I want to edit it.

So lets say I make the changes and import the unmanaged solution to remove the Service button on the left nav.  If I decide I want to make the Service button visible again, all I have to do is make the changes in the xml and import as a new solution?
