Performance Impact of Real Time Workflows

Did a quick Google search and surprisingly didn't find good details on this.  Curious if anyone has leads on info/details on the impact of a real time / synchronous workflow vs. background / asynch workflows.

It seems to me that a real-time workflow would have a higher impact on resources than a background workflow but that's just my layperson's perspective so I was curious if there were any blogs/articles out there that explained this in plain English terms that a non-coder could understand.

    First there's an architecture difference. An async workflow is handled by the CRM Async Service. Depending on the configuration of the servers, this will not impact the performance of the Web Server. As far as I know, the main CRM process will handle the sync workflow. And thus has a direct impact on the performance of the web server.

    But the main thing I would worry about is the performance from a users perspective. The same as with sync plugins, if a sync workflow takes a lot of time, people need to wait for the process to finish before they can continue their work. This might be desired behaviour in some case, but when it's not needed, I would go for async to remove the waiting time from the user.
