Upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 to SQL Server Express 2008 r2

The current SQL Server Express 2005 has a database size limit of 3gb which causes recurring problems.

Can someone guide me through the steps to upgrade the SQL Server Express 2005 that comes with RMS version 2.0 to SQL Server Express 2008 r2 and then to SQL Server Express 2012?

    this takes some knowledge about sql server,  best if your RMS partner does this.  

    Increase you want to move forward anyways,  you can start here:  technet.microsoft.com/.../bb677622(v=sql.110).aspx

    Should take about 10-15 minutes.

    1. Backup RMS on your database server.

    2. Close RMS on all PCs.

    3. Download SQL 2008 R2 Express from: www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

    Suggest selecting the first entry (SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe) as that works best for most RMS users.

    4. Run installer, select option to upgrade 2005 version, select current instance when prompted if correct instance isn't already selected.

    5. Accept defaults to complete the upgrade then close installer.

    This will provide you with 10G limit (2.5x 2005 edition).

    No need for 2012 edition which has reported issues by some users.
