Migration from CRM 2015 On Premise to Dynamics 365?

We are about to migrate from CRM 2015 On Premise to Dynamics 365..

The main problem is that some standard entities and fields have changed "names" in Dynamics 365. I wan't to avoid creating everything again from the bottom.

I see primary 4 areas (And issues)

  1. Transfer Entities and Fields (Should be okay - however some lookup fields should point to entities that have been renamed - so the exported solution need to be edited - to the point to the correct entities)
  2. Transfer Business Rules (Some fields has been renamed - Business rules should be corrected so the logic points to the correct field names)
  3. Transfer Workflows (Same as above. Some fields and entities has been renamed. Workflows should be editited so the logic points to the correct field names and entities)
  4. Transfer data (When all above steps are done, data from "old" structure should be exported and imported into new structure)

This should not be a problem.    I never recommend in place upgrades so you can do lots of testing

You didn't say if you were going on-prem or online but if you are on-prem, you need to backup the database and do this in 2 hops.  You need to upgrade to 2016 first.  Restore the database to CRM 2016 server and use deployment manager to import /upgrade.   Then you would upgrade to D365.   This will keep the entities and fields in tact.    exporting/importing solutions will keep you business rules and workflows in tact.    TEST it all on 2016 and then if it all works, you can then pick a cutover date.

If you are going online, work with your partner as MS will take your database and do a lot of the work for you.   Then you need to import your solutions and do testing.

Im going from On premise 2015 to Online 365.

Why is it advices to upgrade to 2016 first?

I didn't understand much of what you wrote, starting from restoring the database :) Can you explain in more details?

Im not concerned about the data, I need first to figure out how to do step 1-3. Without having to recreate everything because target entity and fields have changed names in Online 365...

on-prem you cannot go straight to D365 from 2015.  You need to upgrade the database and the schema.

Online, do you work with Microsoft at all?  Have you ever exported solutions and imported them into other solutions?  Have you ever worked with CRM Deployment manager?

Need all these details to understand how detailed you need.  Most of this is documented and can be googled but let me know your level and i can better explain.

Ah okay - Upgrading from 2015 to 2016 should be easy enough.

    - Yes we work with Microsoft - however the lead time of everything is to long for my taste, so I prefer that we do what we can our self. Yes I have exported and re-imported solutions from our test to production environment regularly. I have however newer worked with deployment manager. My level is Intermediate, in regards to CRM functionality and in regards to building and customizing the solution including workflows etc.
