Power BI: Basic Versus Pro

ReportReport

Hi:

Please let me know if I am right or wrong on any of the statements that I make below on Power BI licensing.

A Power BI Basic user can write a report.  A different Basic user with access to the Power BI Service (Cloud) can access that report in the Cloud and manually refresh it or even modify that report in the Cloud.

Anyone else who wants to view (consume) that report will need a Pro license, unless that report is embedded within Business Central.

Anyone who wants to share that report with others will need a Pro license.

Thanks!

John

I will add to your post that MOST users do not want their data to be public so I don't ever see that as an option really.

    Hi

Basic user is for Desktop version. As soon as you want to use Power BI Service you need a license. Basically, Basic user can design the report and send the Power BI report to another Basic user (email, onedrive, etc) and that user can open it and use it.

If you want to embedded the report in BC only user with Pro license can see the report. Others cannot see it.

The only way around it is to make a report available to Public (user with Pro can do it) then everyone can see it but it is a public report

    Hi John,

This is so confusing, but if you want to publish a Power Bi report you need to be a Pro user.  If you want to consume the report you need to be a Pro user.  The licensing change a couple of years ago.  I have now just said if you want Power Bi get a Pro license unless you want to download Power Bi Desktop and you are consuming the data through that means.

Hope this helps.  I also say it is $10 per month.  You also only need your power bi license you don't have to buy one for each organization others can share reports with you as a Power Bi Pro user.
